DIY Sugar Scrub - FriYAY DIY!

What is a sugar scrub?

A Sugar Scrub is a type of exfoliant that is made from a mixture of sugar, oil, and other ingredients such as essential oils or fragrances. The sugar is used to gently remove dead skin cells, allowing new skin cells to regenerate for healthier and more radiant skin, while the oil helps to moisturize and nourish the skin. DIY Sugar Scrub can be formulated to be used on different areas of the body, including the face, hands, feet, and body, and is suitable for all skin types. Note: this DIY Sugar Scrub is intended for body use only.

Benefits of using a sugar scrub

  • Exfoliation: As mentioned above, one of the main benefits of using a DIY Sugar Scrub is its ability to exfoliate the skin at home. Exfoliation is the process of removing dead skin cells from the surface of the skin, and it is an important step in maintaining healthy, radiant skin. When you exfoliate with sugar scrub, the sugar crystals gently buff away dead skin cells, revealing smoother, healthier skin underneath.
  • Improved circulation: Sugar Scrubs can help to improve circulation in the skin, which can lead to a healthy, glowing complexion. The massage action of the sugar scrub can stimulate blood flow to the skin, bringing fresh oxygen and nutrients to the surface.
  • Moisturization: Simple DIY Sugar Scrub is typically made with a combination of sugar and oil, which makes it an excellent moisturizing treatment for the skin. The oil helps to lock in moisture, while the sugar helps to draw it into the skin.
  • Anti-aging benefits: Sugar Scrubs can help to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by promoting collagen production in the skin. Collagen is a protein that helps to keep the skin firm and elastic, and as we age, our bodies produce less of it. By stimulating collagen production with a Sugar Scrub, you can help to keep your skin looking youthful and radiant.
  • Relief for dry, rough skin: If you have dry, rough skin on your hands, feet, or elbow, a DIY Sugar Scrub can be your best friend. The exfoliating action of the sugar will help to smooth away rough, flaky patches, while the moisturizing oils will help to nourish and hydrate the skin.
  • Relaxation: Using a Sugar Scrub can be a relaxing and enjoyable experience, especially if you're making a DIY Sugar Scrub with essential oil. The massaging action of the Sugar Scrub can help ease muscle tension and promote a sense of calm and well-being.

DIY Sugar Scrub

Ingredients:
  • 1 cup of granulated sugar (coarse or fine) or brown sugar [see Pro Tips * for more information about which is best for your skin]
  • 1/2 cup of coconut oil
  • 1-2 drops of your favorite essential oil (optional but I love using Peppermint for a Sugar Scrub for my feet or Ylang-Ylang for my body)
Instructions:
  1. In a medium bowl, mix together the sugar and coconut oil until well combined. You may heat the coconut oil for 15-30 seconds in the microwave to soften it to make mixing easier, but be careful as it can get incredibly hot quickly.
  2. If you're using essential oils, add them in and stir until everything is evenly mixed. Your DIY Sugar Scrub is now ready to use!
  3. Wet your skin in the shower or bath, and then take a small amount of the scrub mixture and gently massage it onto your skin in a circular motion.
  4. Rinse off the scrub with lukewarm water and pat your skin dry.
  5. Follow up with your favorite moisturizer (like Infinity Soap Company Body Butter) to lock in hydration.

Pro Tips for using Sugar Scrub on your body:

  • Use your DIY Sugar Scrub once or twice a week: This kind of DIY Sugar Scrub can be used up to twice a week, depending on your skin type and the sensitivity of your skin. If you have sensitive skin, you may want to start by using a sugar scrub once a week and gradually increase to twice a week as your skin adjusts.
  • *Choose the right sugar for your skin type: Sugar scrubs come in a variety of formulations, so it's important to make a DIY Sugar Scrub that is suitable for your skin type. If you have sensitive skin, you may want to use fine granulated sugar or brown sugar for a less harsh scrub. If you have really dry skin, you may choose to leave your scrub on for a few minutes before rinsing it off to allow more oil to soak into your skin.
  • Be gentle: Sugar scrubs can be a powerful exfoliator, so it's important to be gentle when using them. Avoid scrubbing too hard, as this can irritate the skin and lead to redness and discomfort.
  • Use a separate scrub for your face: While sugar scrubs are great for the body, it's generally best to use a separate, gentler scrub for your face. The skin on the face is more delicate than the skin on the body, and using a body scrub on the face can be too harsh. This DIY Sugar Scrub is not recommended for use on your face.
  • Follow up with a moisturizer: After using a sugar scrub, it's important to follow up with a moisturizer to lock in hydration and keep your skin soft and smooth. My favorite is Infinity Soap Company Body Butter, packed with vitamins A, B, and E, Raw Shea Butter, and Jojoba Oil for all day moisture and repair.
